About Edison Pearls
Edison Pearls are a result of one of the newest pearl culturing techniques for freshwater pearls.
Typically, freshwater pearls are cultured with only a small 2mm square of tissue from a donor mollusk and are cultured 12-14 pearls per each host mollusk.
The Edison Pearl is the newest addition to the family of freshwater pearls.
Borrowing techniques from saltwater culturing, only 1 pearl is cultured in each mollusk, and the harvest will yield much larger sized pearls with bright luster and colors such as white, pink, peach, plum, and the more exotic aubergine-purple tones.
The intensity of this luster and color provides the most unique pearls in the freshwater pearl family in terms of color, undertone and size. Currently only 3 farms are producing Edison Pearls.
What separates the Edison Pearl from other freshwater pearls is not only the huge size, but the unique luster, and weight. To find a natural pink, peach and plum with metallic luster, you must be extremely lucky in your traditional freshwater pearl harvests or purchase an Edison Pearl.
This latest innovation in pearl farming technique are called “Edison” pearls —  that come in vivid purple, pink and bronze, bright hues seldom seen before except in dyed pearls, and in sizes of up to three-quarters of an inch.
The techniques are a closely guarded secret. Edison pearls are emblematic of the growing scientific and technological sophistication of Chinese pearl making.
This type of pearls is named after Thomas Edison, even if it seemed a back-handed homage.
